Statistics

Junk removal statistics.

Missed calls, speed to answer, what a junk removal job is worth, how the national franchises run their phones, and what nobody has measured. Every number carries its source and its year, with a link wherever the source can be named, and the famous numbers that fail the trace are listed at the bottom instead of repeated.

Most phone figures come from home services or all businesses, not junk removal alone, and each one says so.

How many calls go unanswered?

No published study measures junk removal alone, so these figures are home services and small businesses. In Invoca's 2026 data, only about half of calls to home services businesses reached a person.

In Invoca's 2026 data, only 52% of calls to home services businesses were answered by a person (65% of calls lasting longer than 15 seconds).

What happens after a missed call?

Few callers leave a message, and many ring someone else. A junk removal operator quoted by Housecall Pro put it plainly: an unanswered customer "is going to call the next company."

How fast do customers expect an answer?

Fast: nearly every homeowner says speed influences who they hire (Housecall Pro, 2025). The best-known speed figures measure web leads, not phone calls, and each card says so.

Calling a web lead back within 5 minutes made the odds of reaching it 100 times higher, and of qualifying it 21 times higher, than waiting 30 minutes.

What nobody has measured

Where no primary source exists, we say so instead of filling the gap.

  • A count of independent junk removal companies. Junk removal has no industry code of its own, and the Census proxy above includes garbage collectors.
  • How many junk removal jobs are booked by phone, and how many online.
  • A missed-call rate for junk removal alone. Every rate on this page is home services or all businesses.
  • How far demand swings by season. A franchisor says spring cleanouts and the summer moving season carry most markets; no published percentage holds up.

Numbers we do not publish, and why

These circulate on junk removal and home service pages. None survived a trace to a source a reader can open, so we list them here instead of repeating them as fact.

Missed calls and voicemail

  • 85%

"85% of callers who get no answer never call back" (sometimes 86%).

No study exists. Even CallRail's ebook cites only "studies show", and the 86% traces to an answering service's unpublished "industry data".

  • 80%

"80% (or 86%) of callers won't leave a voicemail", credited to Invoca.

A misquote. Invoca's own figure is that fewer than 3% of callers pushed to voicemail leave a message.

  • 60 to 80%

"60 to 80% of callers hang up at voicemail."

    Uncited.

  • 62%

"A 2024 ServiceTitan study of 50,000+ contractor lines found a 62% missed-call rate", also credited to IBISWorld.

No such study exists. The real 62% is the 411 Locals 2016 sample of 85 businesses, above.

  • 27%

"Junk removal companies miss 27% of calls."

Invoca's home services figure, relabeled as junk.

  • 26%

"26% of calls missed, at a $310 ticket."

Calculator inputs on a vendor page, not a measurement.

  • 30 to 50%

"30 to 50% of junk leads are lost while on a job."

    An uncited vendor page.

  • 58%

"58% of voicemail callers ring the next junk company", and "they call the next company within 45 seconds".

The 58% is a vendor's labeled estimate; the 45 seconds appeared only in search snippets.

  • 47%

"47% of service calls come outside business hours", or any after-hours share.

Untraceable, and the figures in circulation contradict each other.

Speed and the first responder

  • 78%

"78% hire the first contractor who responds."

Each teller credits a different source, and no report exists.

  • 21x

"Calls answered within 5 minutes convert 21x higher", credited to Harvard Business Review.

The 21x is Oldroyd 2007, via InsideSales.com. It measured the odds of qualifying a web lead, not answered calls, and it is not HBR.

  • 7x

Harvard Business Review's 2011 figures: the 7x, the 2,241 companies, "23% never responded" and the 42-hour average.

None is visible on a live page; the article is paywalled down to its abstract.

  • 97%

"97% of homeowners want an immediate or fast response."

Refuted. Housecall Pro's 97% is transparent pricing; its report has no 97% for speed.

Junk demand, prices and market size

  • 40% / 80%

"40% (or 80%) of junk callers want same-day pickup."

One is a vendor's "industry estimate"; the other is one operator's FAQ.

  • $400
